Part of the reason I'm keeping this journal is because I don't tend to talk to people about how I feel physically when in person. I don't feel comfortable laying out my symptoms like that. However, I was asked by a couple people on the Guai mailing list I'm on about patterns...and I realised that I didn't know...so while I'm also keeping a physical journal that I write in each time I take Guai, I'm writing this one so that my doctor and anyone who wants insight into my interior brain workings can glance and see patterns or just generally marvel at how strangely I'm put together :)

Two bad things happened today. Bro. Jack Worsham, a wonderful member of my church, was hospitalized because of internal bleeding. He lost 7 pints of blood before they bothered to put more blood in him. He nearly died because of negligence. DeForest Kelley died today, as well. He was one of my favorites and will be missed.

08 June 99 Tuesday My ritual when going to the movies is to get a coke and a bag of Starburst. Always. Well, when my brother Tommi, and his friend, Jonathan, invited me to go to Star Wars again with them, I thought nothing of eating Starburst until I started shaking. Then I realised I had been ingesting pure sugar for like...15 minutes. I hadn't even thought about it. I paid for it the rest of the night. Tommi was driving because I was too shaky to trust myself behind the wheel of the car. A panic attack was beginning and usually I'm very calm when other people are driving...not tonight. I think Tommi was almost as frazzled as I was by the time we finally got back home.

06 June 99 Sunday It was very difficult to move around today. My church went to Central Baptist for a special morning service, but because I could hardly stand, I wasn't able to go. Caught up on some rest...Ya, I wish...I laid down, anyway and tried to convince myself I was sleeping since the real thing has been rather elusive lately. I missed the second dose because the invitation for evening service ran a bit late with everyone unburdening their hearts...was worth it, but I don't like to make a habit of missing doses.

05 June 99 Saturday My mother informed me that having nothing in my stomach was as bad as eating sugar, so I'm not able to do a straight "black & white" diet. We just don't have room for more groceries at the moment (if you know my family, you completely understand) and so I'm making do until Dad's next paycheck. No sweets or caffeine, though. I'm being very faithful to that part (I'm totally in Coke withdrawal) and I'm drinking more water than I've ever drunk in my entire life.

03 June 99 Thursday Some rather distressing secrets were revealed by friends last night in anger and a general need to tattle. Just what my family needs-more stress.

It's already really difficult to keep to the new diet and I've only just started. Mom & my sister, Mary, are life savers, though. They took me to Wal-Mart and we went scavenging for things I can eat immediately so while I'm eating minimal selections, we can start to slowly change most products we've been buying.

Mom & I were getting a bit discouraged at how much meat has sugar in it. I found the bright side, though. I'm going to get more time in the kitchen and get brush up on my cooking skills. I do love cooking. :)

Had a bad anxiety attack and mild shaking. Realized the sliced turkey had dextrose in it. I could've sworn I read the label on it, but my brain's been a bit foggy, so maybe I did and maybe I didn't.

02 June 99 Wednesday I'm starting Dr. St. Amand's Strict Diet for Hypoglycemia (HG) today. I'll try it for a month and see if any of my symptoms improve. I'm cheating a bit, though and am going to continue drinking 1% lowfat milk. It's on the liberal HG diet, so one cheat shouldn't be too bad. One thing I didn't list much was how shaky and panicky I've been for the last week. I was informed the shaking and panicking were not FMS symptoms...they were HG symptoms, so we'll see.

I now have to avoid: baked or refried beans, black-eyed or cow peas, bananas, lima beans, potatoes, corn, dried fruits, barley, rice, pasta (all types), burritos and flour tortillas, tamales, ALL sweets, all products that contain Dextrose, Glucose, Hexitol, Maltose, Sucrose, Honey, Fructose, Corn Syrup or Starch, and caffeine.

This is especially awful because: pasta, rice, potatoes, corn, all sweets, and caffeine are a large part of what my family lives on all the time. There's a lot I can eat, though, so I'll just try to look on the bright side when my mother goes on a shopping binge and buys out the cookie & doughnut section of Winn Dixie, eats everything, and still loses 6 inches because of Tae Kwon Do...I'm not sure what the bright side is, yet, but I'll find it :)
